By the end of the 5th century Franks overtook the Romans here and divided the country with one part being called “Francia” or country of the Franks. Around 1000 A.D. the first French speaking king Francien told the ruling class to speak French which as a form of Latin that had evolved ove the years.
In 1066 William the Conquer invaded England from Normandy in France and won the Battle of Hastings. For the next 400 years the language of England was French. In the middle ages France prospered until the Black Death killed thousands and the Hundred year’s War 1337 to 1453) took place.
Joan of Arc was a young female who helped France drive the English out of their country. Over the years England and France fought many wars and skirmishes.
During the 18th century France was considered to be the envy of Europe. In the 1800s Napoleon Bonaparte became the French Emperor and he conquered almost all of Western Europe. He created constitutions and laws in France. He was overthrown in 1814. Many French laws today are based upon Napoleon’s codes he developed. France figure prominently in World Wars I and II and Western Europe was liberated from the Germans after the invasion of Normandy by the allies on June 6th 1944.
